Santa's on His Way! (to the show)

Remember when I took that workshop to make the Patchwork Santa?   You know, the one we sold out of at the last quilt show?  Yeah, that one.

I finally put the finishing touches on him.  I wanted to add a little something special to the cuffs and trim of his hat and coat, so I used one of the fancy stitches on my machine that hardly ever gets to come out and play.

He will be for sale at the show this weekend in our Star Wares booth, along with lots of other handmade fabulousness from our members.

Come see us!

Our Gorgeous Raffle Quilt

One of the ways that our quilt guild supports the amazing programs we offer is by making a quilt and raffling it off at our show every other year.

Starting the very first year we did a batik and black quilt with stars, and the theme stuck.

The quilt we are raffling this year might be my favorite!  It is queen size, so I'm already envisioning it on my guest bed.

How does your guild fundraise?

P.S.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Let me know if you want one.  The drawing will be held on Sunday, September 23 at the end of our show.

Come to the Quilt Show!

It's time for the quilt show!

Next week I will help hang the over 200 quilts for the Stars N Stitches Quilt Show.  This is your chance to see all of the Storybook Quilts and the WannaBees group quilt in person.

It will be held on Saturday, September 22 from 10 am - 5 pm, and Sunday, September 23 from 11 am - 5 pm at Lakewood 400 Antiques Market.  This is a new location from previous years.

Back by popular demand...Star Wares!  This is the booth where you can purchase handmade items crafted by our guild members.  (Note:  if you are up that way for the Antiques Market, Star Wares is also open this weekend, September 15-16).

Let me know if you're going to be there.  I'd love to say hi in person!

Quilt Shops App Review

For the past year we've been traveling more than usual. My oldest child is a senior in high school, so college visits have been on the agenda.

I learned from Sandy over at Quilting for the Rest of Us that the emotional toll of sending your child to college can be slightly tempered by the proximity of a local quilt shop, so I've been keeping an eye out for the university with just the right balance.

On our rounds I have been testing out one of the smartphone apps for finding a fabric fix, aptly named Quilt Shops.  It was developed by Quilter's Club of America and the publisher of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting Magazine.  It's a good starting place if you are looking for a quilt shop near you.

For example, when we visited Auburn University (War Eagle!), I did a quick search for shops near me and found this:

It looks like there are a few shops right on my way back to Atlanta!  Awesome.

But wait...one of them turns out to be a fabric manufacturer.  (And not even quilting cotton.  How'd that get in there?)

Hmmm...this one looks good...but there's no website listed.  Luckily there's a phone number.  I call and find out that they are open and are an actual quilt shop.  Jackpot!

Likewise, when we visited Florida State University (Go 'Noles!), my search turned up a shop that looked perfect.  There was a live website, although it hadn't been updated in awhile.  Luckily I called before I drove out there, because this shop is now closed.  Bummer.

I don't have screen shots of the Tallahassee shop because it has already been removed from the app.  There is a feeback button so you can report shops that are closed and add locations that haven't been listed in their database yet.

As I said, a good starting place, but be sure to call before you go out of your way.  Send feedback when you find information that needs to be updated; the more we all help fine tune the data, the better it will be for all of us quilters when we're on the road again!

Have you tried any of the quilting apps for your smartphone? Which ones are your favorites?

Goodbye SeamedUP - Hello ThreadBias!

So I guess you heard.

Yes, we are so sorry to say that SeamedUP is no more.  It has been such an interesting ride, an incredible learning experience, and a tremendous opportunity to get more involved with the quilting community; in the end, we just couldn't sustain the amount of time and resources the site required.

One of the best things about being invited onto this team was getting to work with Brye and Allison and the volunteers.

The worst part was not having time to actually use this site that I loved.

Hopefully I will be able to keep the conversation alive with all of the quilters in this phenomenal community through more consistent blogging.

And, hopefully, I will now have more time to quilt and chat.

On that note, I'm heading over to ThreadBias to set up my sewing room.  It looks like fun place to gather with a lot of the same features as SeamedUP.  I will be QuiltinJenny over there as well, so why don't you come too and we'll follow each other?

Thanks so much to everyone who joined us at SeamedUP.  We loved seeing every one of your projects and each glimpse into your sewing room.

Ba Bling Ba Bling - Video Tutorial

I was adding the crystals to my WannaBees challenge block and decided to play around with the video settings on my camera.

If you want to see how I added the gems, you can watch this ONLY if you promise to forgive me for the quality of the video. Obviously the next class I need to take is a photography/video class. Also, I couldn't find my tripod even though I just saw it the other day while I was looking for something totally different. Silly me thought I would remember where that "safe place" was. HA!

I got my cordless Tulip tool and the gems at JoAnn's.

Questions?  Suggestions for an inexpensive online photography class?  Let me know!
