That's my word for 2013, my mantra, if you will. (I explained why over here.)
When I read about this challenge, I wanted my word to be somewhere I would see it regularly, where it would have the possibility to imprint on my subconscious even if I weren't deliberately thinking about it.
And that's when this idea popped into my head!
I have often bemoaned the idea that I quilt in fits and starts - churning out a quilt in a day or going whole months without touching my machine at all. I've figured out that inertia is my friend or enemy. When I am actually quilting, I can hardly think of anything else and hate to stop; however, once stopped, I find it overwhelming to start again.
True confession: I'm also not the world's best housekeeper. Not even close. So frequently, after one of these bouts of not quilting, I have to get out the vacuum and dust my machine. Not because of the lint or the loose threads, but because of actual dust.
So what could be a more perfect project? I made a dust cover for my machine that has my word of the year on it!
I've been meaning to make one of these covers for years, although I wondered if covering the thing up would make it even less likely for me to get started. I'm hoping, though, that the word on the outside will be a reminder to uncover it and rediscover that feeling. I'm also hoping that I will be more likely to get sewing if I know I don't have to dust first!
For the background I used one of my all time favorite fabrics with words on it. It was hard to cut into what little I have left, but I'm glad it will be so visible.
And for those days when I'm feeling a little more sassy, I lined it with this fun fabric that I've never been quite sure what to do with. Kind of like a mood ring for my sewing room!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful job on the machine cover. It looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion like those other 'bad' words, Dust is a 4 letter word....
ReplyDeleteGreat solution to the problem of dust on your machine! :) Much easier than dusting!!! :) :) :)
Nice sewing machine cover. Love the fabric.
ReplyDeleteI wish I made that pillow when my sun was younger, he never wanted to share his toys.

ReplyDeleteI love this fabric cover for your machine..very nostalgic..whos is it? fabric collection..Ok, is this a reversible cover with Share on it..or did you make 2 covers and you have 2 machines...help me lol
ReplyDeleteIt is a reversible cover. The cream fabric with the inspirational words all over it is from the Laurel Burch Holiday Collection for Clothworks. It is several years old.
DeleteThe "sassy" fabric is called "Housework Whenever" by Sharon Yenter for In the Beginning Fabrics. It's from 2009.

ReplyDeleteI love it! Inside and out! B-)
ReplyDeleteI love the line on the fabric, "When I learned to sew I forgot how to cook." That's me exactly! Who has time to cook when you're caught up in all the inertia? Great project.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun fabric. No wonder you could hardly cut into it. I had to laugh at your word "Share". I can't tell you how many times I said that raising kids. I was a broken record! :-)

Sharing is the word I am teaching my grand daughter this month. She is almost 2, and an only child so far. It is never too soon to learn. Love your sassy fabric.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cover and now no more of those nasty bunnies! I also love the sassy material you choose for the interior of your cover!
ReplyDeleteI love your word and the fact that you will now have a dust free machine and more time to sew. Thanks or sharing.
ReplyDeleteI have a cover half way done.. and cannot seem to finish it. I am making it from scratch, measured my machine, etc., so it may be that I am not confident in my design. Did you use a pattern for yours?
ReplyDeleteI think having a cover might have me using it more, as you said, it will be clean when I go to sit down and I can just start. They DO get dusty! I'm hoping your momentum will inspire me. I want to get this done!
Love your word. And how you used it. Share your talents. That is so awesome. Thank you for "Share"ing!
