I've been AWOL for a bit due to the usual end-of-school-year crazy, but I had to get my act together for the Bloggers Quilt Festival. I absolutely love this idea, and thoroughly enjoy looking at all of the quilts when I have a few free moments.
The quilt I chose this time is one I made in 2006. It was both a Christmas gift for my cousin and a guild challenge. The challenge was twofold: first, the quilt had to reflect the name of your favorite song. The song title had to be somewhere on the front of the quilt. Second, we drew block names out of a basket. That block had to be somewhere on the quilt.
I drew "Attic Windows." Ugh. I immediately had an idea to use the song "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. I wanted to put photos of my cousin with her husband, who died in December, 2004. Somehow making all of those Attic Window blocks did not thrill me. I wanted to do Tennessee Waltz - enjoying the double meaning of the block. So I made it the way I wanted, and used Attic Windows to create the border. In the border, I wrote the chorus of the song. Clever?
I love adding pictures to quilts. This one made me feel a little bit smug because of the significance of the song and how it went with the pictures, but also because I had to figure out what to make the points out of so that the illusion of a curved line would be intact. In the end, I made a collage out of the pictures and printed it onto a fabric sheet, then cut the triangles from that. It was like designing my own fabric!
On the label I included all of the words to the song. It still makes me catch my breath.
